It depends on your own attitude and those with whom you are interacting. If you don't believe it is a game, and are not interacting with anyone else, or everyone you are interacting with has the same attitude as you, then it is not a game.
On the other hand, if you think it's a game then it is a game, and not only is it a game for you, it becomes a game for anyone that you interact with as well, whether they like it or not.
And that last situation is what causes drama.

Hmm... I do not treat it as a game but I am very sure I know avatars that do treat it as a game, so my interaction with avowed "SLGamers" is always cautious. The hard part is figuring out just who the "gamers" are;-) Having some Drama? The folks "playing" on the GD Forum might be more inclined to be "gamers" than the same ones you meet In World. What have you done with Cato? ;-)
ReplyDeleteAh, this made me think. I suppose I do not treat SL as a game 100% of the time, I am afraid I am too much 'me' when operating Cait. On the other hand, some activities are obvious part of a game (the fighting, being the 'serious' clanleader and such).
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's different when one gets romantically involved and the whole partner-thing? I never did that but most of the drama I witnessed in SL seems to be coming from 'SL-love' and relationships.
I agree with that theory, Cait. It sort of dove-tails with alt use and the reasons behind creating alts. I too use SL as an in-world FPS [or battle/weapon use] platform and to play SLgames like Greedy, so there are "games" and then there are Games;-) I am always RL me and that is why I am rotten at Role Play. LOL
